Shella Films is a Los Angeles-based film production company founded by Jennifer Brea, director of the Sundance award-winning documentary film, Unrest. We are looking for a Scientific Outreach Consultant to help devise and execute a strategy for leveraging the film to engage scientific and medical communities. This strategy will be an integral part of the film’s distribution and its ambitious, global impact campaign over the next 12-18 months, culminating in a PBS broadcast in early 2018 and a multi-platform release.

Our social impact and public awareness campaign will leverage the film to educate and engage medical and scientific communities around Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) and related autoimmune diseases.

The role would be ideal for someone with deep scientific training who is looking to make a career transition into nonprofit, education, policy or media. They are passionate about communicating medical and scientific topics to both expert and general audiences. They can capably bridge medical and scientific communities, working with partners in government, academia, private foundations and private companies.


Key duties and responsibilities are:


  • Work closely with our impact producer to devise a strategic plan for medical and scientific outreach and education related to the documentary film campaign

  • Research and develop relationships with key research teams and foundations working on ME/CFS and related conditions all around the world and converse fluently about their work

  • Research and develop relationships with relevant government and private scientific, biotech and pharma agencies and companies

  • Work closely with our Director of Impact to devise a strategic plan for scientific outreach and education related to the documentary film campaign

  • Assist in producing written and audiovisual educational scientific and medical content (where needed, with feedback from outside advisors)

  • Organize a virtual conference and/or other events that creates a space for ongoing collaboration and advances among researchers

  • Research potential new sources of funding for the campaign and for the research field

  • Help form specific giving asks for high level donors interested in giving directly to research



Ideal candidate will have the following attributes:  


  • Research MA in relevant scientific field required, Ph.D preferred. MD's with research experience also welcome to apply. Relevant fields include: genetics, biochemistry, neurology, immunology, infectious disease or other medical or biological field

  • Lab and/or clinical trial experience preferred

  • At least one year experience in business, nonprofit or policy fields, 3-5 years preferred

  • Initiative, common sense, high energy and the ability to hit the ground running

  • Excellent organizational and people skills

  • Interest in films with impact campaign goals, and enthusiasm to develop your skills in impact and become part of that process

  • Available 10-20 hours per week for at least 2-4 months

  • Willingness and availability to travel nationally, possibly internationally
